National natural complex sanctuary Kolvitsky

Address:

Murmansk region, Tersky district and Apatity area in the south-west of Kola peninsula. The southern area of sanctuary is situated between Kolvitsky lake and Nizhnie Contozero lake and stretches to the north from the west Bolshaya river bank to the south border of Bolshoe Saigozero lake

The idea of sanctuary establishing was a birds’ and aminals’ protection (moose and Northern reindeer especially) from hunting and trade. Nowadays the sanctuary maintains the natural conditions for the rare animals and plants. Taiga is fur- trees and pine-trees. It is important that there are large tracts of old-growth forests. Bogs play significant role also. Flora of the sanctuary is a large variety of species: more than 400 species of vascular plants and over 150 species of lichens. 22 species of vascular plants are protected on the territory of the Murmansk region and 2 types (Calypso bulbs of the Orchid family and polutnik lake) is listed in the Red book of Russia. The fauna is also represent various types as : lynx, wolverine, the whooper swan, peregrine falcon, white-tailed eagle, osprey, etc. Twelve species, including the whooper Swan, osprey, peregrine falcon, kestrel, gray crane, great grey owl, etc., are under protection of the Red book of the Murmansk region, and the osprey and the peregrine Falcon - in the Red book of Russia.

On the territory are allowed:

a) zoological, botanical, fisheries research and experimental work according to the approved plans of the research work as agreed with the Committee of ecology and nature management of the Murmansk region, the administration of the sanctuary.

b) mushrooms and berries gathering;

c) ) tourist organization as agreed with the Committee of ecology and nature management of the Murmansk region;

d) conducting forest inventory, silvicultural works, intermediate cuttings and other forestry activities (with the exception of felling) within the boundaries of the refuge by special permission of the Forestry Agency of the Murmansk region and as agreed with the Committee of ecology and nature management of the Murmansk region;

e) sports and recreational fishing organization of on the basis of permits of Federal authority in the field of water bioresources as agreed with the Committee of ecology and nature management of the Murmansk region;

f) number regulation of hunting animals by special permission of the on the basis of permits of Federal authority in the field of control and supervision in sphere of protection, reproduction and use of water biological resources and their habitats in the Murmansk region.
